Are United making history in front of our eyes?

The dreaded "Q" word is making more and more appearances in the press of late and I think it's about time the chances of this historic feat happening are addressed.

Manchester United started the season in pursuit of seven trophies, if you include the Community Shield. Having been beaten by an impressive Zenit St Petersburg side in the European Super Cup and an indifferent start to the season, there was not a murmur of doubles, trebles, quadruples or even a quintuple, but the side have steamrollered the opposition put in front of them and broken a plethora of defensive records in the process.

The win over Tottenham in the Carling Cup final added to the World Club Championship won in December mean that of the ‘quintuple' two trophies are already in the bag. And the team are looking increasingly impressive at brushing teams aside in difficult circumstances, as revealed at Blackburn and Newcastle.

Nevertheless, the upcoming week will make or break United's season, first Fulham in the F.A Cup on Saturday then Internazionale on Wednesday.

Fulham at Craven Cottage are a difficult prospect, having only conceded 10 goals and lost 2 games at home. United have been in imperious form of late, winning 5 of the last 6 away matches and recently devoured a helpless Fulham side 3-0 at Old Trafford. This time round the Cottagers will be a different animal; Roy Hodgson has done an excellent job in turning the club round from being relegation threatened to a solid mid-table side. Although I do believe United will progress to the next round of the cup, this will be a tough tie and could have a knock on effect in the Champions League.

In Internazionale de Milano, Manchester United faces a side that are similar in position to them. Dominating Serie A, possible place in the Coppa Italia (I will come back to this) and Champions League glory all within their grasp. Before the first leg, Inter were an immovable object and in Manchester United they met the irresistible force. A force that completely dominated them in the first half of the match, and were much the better side overall.

Following the first leg, Inter have drawn with AS Roma in an exhilarating match that they did not turn up for ... in the first half at least. Then only this week they were humbled by a resurgent Sampdoria side 3-0 in the Coppa Italia, who for 30 minutes was down to 10 men. Definitely not the best preparation for a trip to Old Trafford. This weekend they travel to Genoa, a side who haven't lost all season at home. The omens do not look promising for Jose.

The match against Inter will be a tight affair and has the potential to be a classic, Ferguson vs. Mourinho, Zlatan vs. Ronaldo, Giggs vs. Zanetti, Evra vs. Maicon etc. Battles will rage all over the field. This is the toughest test United will have had so far and one they can pass with flying colours but I cannot rule out Inter, with Mourinho and Ibrahimovic, they have two aces in their hand, but my head says United to progress.

With two of the seasons most important fixtures ahead Manchester United have the class and solidity but most importantly the squad to cope with the rigours of 3 competitions. I believe Sir Alex wants to win another European title and with the Premiership all but ours, it could be the F.A. Cup that is ‘sacrificed' for the greater good. They should come through this week still in the hunt and I for one am quietly optimistic about our hopes for dare I say it a ...Quintuple.
